How do you plan vacations to places you haven't personally traveled before?


I wish I could say I've been everywhere! In those scenarios, I collaborate with my travel partners located all over the globe to help me create unforgettable vacation experiences. They are my best resource. Plus, I have a network of Travel Advisors to tap into and learn from as well.




What if I want to use points for a portion of my vacation?


If you are interested in using points for flights or hotels, or if you want to be sure to earn points on your travels, this is important to let me know in advance. During the proposal process, I can research flight and hotel options that fit your loyalty program guidelines; however, I cannot use your points to complete the reservation. Airlines and hotels consider points personal property and therefore do not enable me to make a reservation on your behalf with points. When it's time to confirm reservations, please fulfill these components with points and forward all confirmation details to me to include in your itinerary.




What is the best way to communicate during this process?


During the planning process, email communication is best. That allows us to keep track of anything discussed. Emails are answered within two business days. If you prefer a phone call you may schedule it on the MTD calendar. While you are traveling, I will be available for you as much as possible. As time zones may make it difficult to answer immediately, you will often have local partners available to help with any issues that may arise. I will always provide emergency contact information through the supplier as well. That is included in the final itinerary sent before your departure.




What is Virtuoso?


Virtuoso provides you with VIP perks and amenities such as resort credits, complimentary breakfast, early check-in / late check-out, and room upgrades, to name a few. Virtuoso is the travel industry's leading luxury network. Being a member allows me to specialize and create culturally immersive experiences you can't find online or plan yourself.




What if I plan a trip and then decide to go in a different direction?


Since the work I do involves custom trip planning, the time spent on your trip is uniquely yours. Starting from scratch is possible, but will require another trip planning fee.




When finalizing an itinerary, will I receive a detailed invoice with a line by line price breakdown?


Every trip I design, and subsequently the invoice details and payment terms provided, are different from one trip to the next. Some trips will be a total package with a deposit and final payment. Some trips will be a per-person cost with flights and pre and post-arrangements (hotels, transfers, activities, etc.) listed as separate components. I will provide a breakdown when possible. In some cases, my partners are designing these customized packages with negotiated rates that are confidential. I work very closely with our partners to ensure that the total package is equal to or less than booking each component one by one. I will be here to guide you, answer any questions, and recommend modifications if necessary.




What if I need to cancel my trip?


Cancellation costs vary by supplier. Depending on the terms of your vacation, trip insurance is highly recommended in the event you need to cancel or postpone your trip. If you would like a policy that includes the ability to cancel for any reason, please let me know.




Do you recommend trip insurance?


Travel insurance for all trips is highly recommended. During the planning process, I will provide you with a quote. You are welcome to research other policies as well.




How does MacMillan Travel Design make money?


In addition to one-time planning fees, Resorts/Cruises build in a commission to their pricing even if you don’t use an advisor. When you book through an advisor, you receive our VIP perks, and we receive a commission from the Resort/Cruise for bringing the business to them at no cost to you. Your price is never inflated in anticipation of an advisor's commission. The commission is paid to me after your travel is complete.




What if we'd like to stay in a home or villa rental, such as on AirBNB or VRBO?


In working together to design an itinerary, it is of utmost priority that I am confident in the service and experience provided from start to finish during your travels. I place a tremendous amount of importance on the partners I work with and the properties/homes that I feel comfortable recommending to you as my client. I work with partners who provide annually vetted home and villa rentals, ensuring a consistent level of service. Airbnb and VRBO do not provide this same level of service. Additionally, if there are any questions or concerns before or during your vacation, I am limited in how I can assist. Both in the United States and around the world, I work with preferred partners who provide luxury home and villa rental options. Let me know in advance if you'd like these vetted options in your proposal design.
